Synopsis

“Why do I hate myself?” “Why can’t I hear God?” “What’s wrong with me?” These are the questions cynical 15-year-old Jannah "Jen" Grey asks herself every single day. In 1992, Jen's parents order her to attend another miserable year at a local Adventist boarding school. Exiled from her hometown, she struggles with her dire questions away from the comfort of home and the guidance of her parents. Add to that the stresses of doing homework, working to cover her tuition, dealing with her classmates' teasing, handling a school smuggling ring, and being forced to teach Christian—a spoiled buffoon—about the Bible. Only through God, sarcasm, and the support of her friends—Naomi the pyromaniac and Joy the sage—can she overcome. In this funny, satirical take on Adventist culture and education, we watch as Jen grapples with her senses of self-doubt, isolation, and worthlessness, ultimately giving her life back to God.
